What is up my twig squad! For this post I thought I should talk a little bit about social media. I have a social media. My friends have a social media. My family has a social media. Tons of people have social media. I have seen this a whole lot, “Dangers of social media.” “Girl kidnapped because of Instagram.” And more. Everyone talks about the dangers of social media and how it is bad for the brain but no one ever talks about the positives. I think I mentioned in one of my last posts that people are often times focused on the negatives and a lot of the time we forget about the positives. So what I guess I am trying to get at is what is good in the social media world.
Number one. It is a huge connection. Whether it be friends or family. I only say this out of experience. For example, on my dads side of the family I had this cousin who I used to go over to their house and play with when I was little all the time. As I grew up I moved in with my mom and we ended up not talking for a few years. Well, one day I got on my Instagram and I found my cousin. I hit the follow button, he followed me back and messaged me. We talked and caught up. That connection that we lost a few years ago was brought back through social media. Now I am not saying go out and follow four hundred random people and hit them up and say that you two have a “connection” but at least you can stay in touch with old friends or churches or communities.
Number two. Its a good way to get involved and see what is going on around you. Before I had some of the social media apps that I have now I had no clue what was going on in the world. I didn’t know what was bad or good or who the “latest new pop singers” were. I would go to school and people would be talking about the video they saw on Instagram or Snapchat and I would just sit their and nod. I didn’t know what to think or what to do cause I wasn’t in the loop and I had absolutely no clue what was going on in the world. If I didn’t have social media today I probably wouldn’t know what the “build a wall” movement was all about unless I asked a friend.
Number three. Support. There are tons of things and people out their who post drugs and videos of them smoking or drunk but also there are pictures of people who went out of their way to spread the word about the Bible. Or to have fun with friends that they love. If you read some comments people post then it might say something like “I hate myself.” and someone else might reply with, “Whatever your going through let me help you.” I use quotation marks because I am copying this straight from a post I found and I was just scrolling through the comments and found this. It was part of what inspired me to write this. There is so much hate in the world and right now all the hate is overruling the good and the positives. The death rate on teens are going up because they are injuring themselves and everyone is depressed. I am not going to lie social media has so much bad on it but their is so much good too. I think people just ignore the good but praise the bad.
For example, if you saw a someone fall down at school and papers went flying everywhere and then a few people walk over to help pick them up, you might say, “Hey those are nice people.” or you might just walk on by. But if there was a fight going on, most likely, you would pull out your phone and record or maybe tell some people about it. See what I mean? Don’t forget to acknowledge the good just as much as the bad. Keep on twigging,
